La Figura de la Semana

Tino Martínez y su regreso a New York

The return of Tino Martínez to New York

By: Dagoberto Galán – Translation: Félix DeJesús

After three years away from Yankee Stadium, the return of Tino Martínez to the park in the Bronx makes him the feature of the week. An agreement with the owner of the franchise, George Steinbrenner, puts Tino Martínez back in his definite home, in accordance with what his fans, executives and Martínez think. “My family, especially my 11 year old son, who is a faithful follower of the Yankees, are very happy with my return to New York. They did not expect me to sign with anybody else,” said Martínez in an interview with writer, Steve Serby of the New York Post. Tino was replaced by robust, Jason Giambi in 2001, even though he was considered an icon on the team. His time with the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed him under the direction of two great strategists, Tony LaRussa and Lou Piniella, who join Joe Torre to form a trio of great managers for Tino. It is believed that because of his ample knowledge and stellar tutelage, Tino could some day become a manager himself. “It is possible that after being under the tutelage of these great strategists, if I use the best of these great managers, I think I can do it,” said Martinez.
