Con 19 ponches y un triunfo en su primera semana con los Mets de Nueva York, Pedro Martínez (1-0) es la Figura de la Semana. El derecho dominicano lanzó juego completo ante los Bravos de Atlanta para derrotarlos 6 carreras por 1, teniendo como rival a John Smoltz (0-2) que busca regresar como abridor, luego de haber hecho una transición a relevista. Martínez, que tiró la ruta completa esparciendo dos hits, fue apoyado por el puertorriqueño Carlos Beltrán que conectó cuadrangular con uno a bordo en el octavo capítulo, arruinando la apertura a Smoltz, quien hizo abanicar la brisa a 15 Mets. Martínez retiró en fila a los últimos 16 bateadores que enfrentó, ponchando a nueve y dio solo un boleto gratis. El dirigente Willie Randolph no quiso que se repitiera la historia del encuentro inaugural donde Pedro poncho 12, pero no pudo ganar al fallar el pitcheo de relevo. Esta fue la primera victoria de los Mets en la temporada y de Randolph como capataz del equipo de Queens, a la vez que representó la ocasión 43 en que Martínez completa nueve entradas como lanzador. La única libertad que dio Martínez fue en el cuarto acto, cuando Atlanta marcó una carrera mediante boleto negociado por Chipper Jones y doble de Johnny Estrada con dos outs. Smoltz ganaba el desafío hasta que el dominicano José Reyes abrió el octavo con un sencillo y avanzó a segunda con el sacrificio del venezolano Miguel Cairo. Acto seguido, Beltrán la depositó en las tribunas del bosque derecho en cuenta de 2-1, enviando a Smoltz a las duchas y encaminando la victoria que puso a los Mets con récord de 1-5, luego de comenzar la campaña 0-5 por primera vez desde 1963. Martínez y Beltrán llegaron al Shea Stadium gracias a maniobras del gerente general de los Mets, Omar Minaya, que busca que su equipo deje atrás los años anteriores en los que ha quedado en el sótano de la División Este de la Liga Nacional.

With 19 strikeouts and a win in his first week with the New York Mets, Pedro Martínez (1-0) is this week’s feature figure. The Dominican right hander, pitched a complete game against the Atlanta Braves to defeat them 6 to 1, he faced John Smoltz (0-2), who is in the starting rotation after being a reliever for a couple of years. Martínez, who went the distance, allowed only two hits and was helped out by Puerto Rican, Carlos Beltrán who belted a home run with one on in the eight to ruin Smoltz’s 15 strikeout performance. Martínez, retired the last 16 batters, (during the game he struck out 9 and only allowed one base on ball). The manager Willie Randolph did not want history to repeat itself like the opening game of the season where Pedro struck out 12, but the relievers failed. This was the first victory for the Mets and Randolph as team manager. It was the 43rd time Martínez completes a game. The only run Martínez allowed was in the fourth inning when Chipper Jones walked and Johnny Estrada doubled with two outs. Smoltz was winning the game until Dominican José Reyes opened the eighth inning with a hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice from Venezuelan, Miguel Cairo. The next batter, Beltrán deposited the ball in right field on a 2-1 count, delivering Smoltz to the showers, and taking the Mets to a 1-5 record after starting the season 0-5 for the first time since 1963. Martínez and Beltrán, came to Shea Stadium thanks to the shuffling of general manager, Omar Minaya, who hopes to leave behind the years where the Mets were in last place in the eastern division in the National League.
