La Figura de la Semana

George Steinbrenner

George Steinbrenner and Tony LaRussa

George Steinbrenner and Tony LaRussa

Two sweeps this weekend make George Steinbrenner and Tony LaRussa this week’s feature figures. The three games won by the Baltimore Orioles against the New York Yankees caused the “Boss” George Steinbrenner to explode, "Enough is enough. I am bitterly disappointed, as I'm sure all Yankee fans are, by the lack of performance by our team," Steinbrenner said in a statement issued immediately after the game. "It is unbelievable to me that the highest paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk. They are not playing like true Yankees. They have the talent to win and they are not winning. I expect Joe Torre, his complete coaching staff and the team to turn this around." The Yankees finished the second weekend of the season with a 4-8 record, with four consecutive losses, from Thursday to Sunday. After the debacle of last year against the Boston Red Sox in the American League championship series, Steinbrenner made the team sign left handed pitcher, Randy Johnson and right hander Carl Pavano looking for history not to repeat itself, but this season has started worse than expected.

On a positive note, the other feature figure, Tony LaRussa, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, who swept the three game series against the Milwaukee Brewers beating them on Sunday 3-2, reached the 800th victory of his career. The game was decided by Scout Rolen, who drove in three runs, including the winning run, with a homer in the ninth inning, to seal the victory for the Cardinals.
