Guillén goes against his fellow Latin players

By: Dagoberto Galán - Translation: Félix DeJesús

Telling hard facts about his fellow Latin ball players makes José Guillén the figure of the week. The Washington Nationals outfielder said that despite challenging language barriers, Spanish-speaking players know exactly what they're putting in their bodies. The baseball world has been shocked by the new regulations regarding steroid use, which was not prohibited a couple of years ago. The most surprising aspect is that more than half the players suspended for positive tests at both the major and minor league levels were born in Latin America. "Unfortunately, it's been Latin guys. They knew what they were doing. There's no excuse for them. We're all grown enough men and we all know what we're doing," said Guillén. After becoming aware of the number of Latin players who tested positive, some big leaguers like Dominican, David Ortiz and Puerto Rican third baseman Jose Valentin, said that some Latin players probably throw away important documents because they can't read them. Guillén came to the United States at age 19 and couldn't speak a word of English. He was determined to learn, and still encourages his friends and countrymen to do the same if they want to play professional baseball. "I came to the States and spoke no English, but I took it upon myself to learn. This is an American game, not a Latin game. You need to learn to speak the language." As of May 8th, Guillén was batting .330 and is one of the leaders of his new team.
