El dueño de los Yankees de Nueva York, George Steinbrenner, anunció oficialmente la construcción de un nuevo estadio en El Bronx, luego de barajar varias posibilidades que albergaran el equipo más caro de las Grandes Ligas. Escoltado por el alcalde Michael Bloomberg y el gobernador George Pataki, Steinbrenner hizo hincapié en la decisión de quedarse en El Bronx a pesar de que se analizaron las ciudades de Manhattan, New Jersey y Westchester. El costo del estadio es de unos $800 millones y estaría listo para la temporada del 2009. Es el tercer estadio que tendrá financiamiento privado luego de que se inaugurara el Dodger Stadium en el 1962. La eliminación del actual estadio, que fue inaugurado en el 1923, deja el Wrigley Field de Chicago (1914) y el Fenway Park de Boston (1912), como los únicos parques en función de los que se construyeron a inicios del siglo. El cambio choca con la decisión de la gerencia de los Medias Rojas de mantener el “Fenway” como patrimonio histórico, a pesar de que el propietario del equipo de Boston, Larry Lucchino, no critica el cambio en New York. “No podemos sentirnos apenados por lo que hace o no hace el equipo de los Yankees” dijo Lucchino y agregó: “Que tengan suerte. Tenemos diferentes patrones, para nosotros el dinero no lo es todo”. Entre los cambios realizados en el nuevo estadio está el regreso del “bullpén” al lado derecho del terreno, luego de que por años estuvo entre el “left-center field”. El nombre del estadio será el mismo aunque hubo algunos posibles nombres para sustituir el actual.
