THIS DAY IN BASEBALL October 25: Giants reliever Yusmeiro Petit wins 2014 World Series Game 4

Yusmeiro Petit was a dependable middle reliever for the San Francisco Giants when on this day in béisbol, October 25, 2014 he pitched three scoreless innings to notch the win in Game 4 of the World Series.
The victory gave the Venezuelan righty, a win in each of the three postseason series the Giants played — the ALDS, ALCS and the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.
Petit, 29, also got a single in Game 4, making him the first relief pitcher to get a hit in a Fall Classic game in nearly 20 years.
The Giants went on to beat the Royals in seven games in what was a memorable year for Petit, who pitched 6 scoreless innings in Game 2 of the ALDS to get the win in a 2-1, 18-inning contest. That August he set a Major League record by retiring 46 consecutive batters over eight outings.
Also on this day: In 1997, Florida Marlins shortstop Edgar Renteria drove in a pair of runs with a clutch two-out single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the the Marlins a dramatic Game 7 win over the Indians. Marlins starter Livan Hernandez, who was named ALCS MVP for winning two games against the Braves, followed that up with ALCS MVP honors for going 2-0 in the seesaw series.
