THIS DAY IN BÉISBOL July 25: Roberto Clemente hits only inside-the-park, walk-off grand slam in history

With his team down three runs in the bottom of the ninth of an 8-5 game, the bases were loaded and the Pirates were desperately in need of a clutch hit.

Roberto Clemente came through. And topped it off with a flourish.

The dynamic young right-fielder hit a walk-off grand slam to beat the Cubs on this day in baseball, July 25, 1956.

As if that wasn’t enough heroics for one day, Clemente sealed the win with a huge dose of drama — the winning slam was an inside-the-park homer.

Clemente, in his second year in the Majors, went to the plate and smacked a screaming liner over the left-fielder’s head that caromed off the outfield fence and rolled around the warning track at Forbes Field, giving the trio of Buc baserunners ample time to score as Clemente made a mad dash around the bases.

But instead of settling for a tying triple, Clemente decided to go for it all. He ran through the third-base coach’s stop sign and barreled into home just as the relay throw was coming in.

Clemente overslid the plate and had to reach back with his hand, but he scored the winning run in the 9-8 game and giving the small crowd of 12,341 a thrill — it stands as the only time a player has hit an inside-the-park grand slam for a walk-off win.
